George Clair Tooker, Junior (born August 5, 1920 in Brooklyn , New York City , † March 27, 2011 in Hartland , Vermont ) was an American painter and representative of magical realism .

Tooker grew up in Brooklyn Heights and Bellport , New York . After graduating from school, he first studied English literature at Harvard University and graduated in 1942. The following year he began studying at the Art Students League of New York . Early in his career, Tooker was compared to other painters such as Andrew Wyeth , Edward Hopper, and his friends Jared French and Paul Cadmus . Subway (1950; Whitney Museum of American Art ) and Government Bureau (1956; Metropolitan Museum of Art ) are among his best-known works. Waiting Room (1957; Smithsonian American Art Museum , Washington, DC ) shows him as a representative of social realism .

Tooker was elected Associate Member ( ANA ) in 1968 and Full Member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design two years later , and has also been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1983 . In 2007 he received the National Medal of Arts . He last lived in Vermont .
