The Calanda Bräu was a Swiss beverage manufacturer . The brewery Calanda produced after the takeover by Heineken continues to 1993, the tradition-rich Grisons beer brand Calanda.

history

In 1780, the Bündner brewer Rageth Mathis opened a small house brewery in the Welschdörfli of Chur . The competition was fierce: there were over 260 breweries in Switzerland at that time. At the beginning of the 20th century, the microbreweries merged into larger breweries as a result of industrialization. So did the Rageth Mathis brewery, which joined the Chur Aktienbrauerei in 1902 . Shortly thereafter, the Rhaetian Aktienbrauerei emerged, with breweries from Thusis to Davos .

Business did not go well during the First and Second World Wars . Only in the middle of the 20th century did things pick up again. In 1971 the Engadiner Aktienbrauerei and Rhaetian Beverages AG merged to form the Calanda Bräu brewery . When the Winterthur brewery Haldengut was added in 1990 , Calanda Haldengut became the third largest Swiss brewery. In 1993, the Calanda Bräu was taken over by Heineken , and Calanda has continued as a beer brand ever since.

The Edelbräu brand was registered as a trademark in 1980. Until 2013, Calanda brewed the low-price beer Prix-Garantie for the major distributor Coop . Then Coop outsourced the production. Calanda has also been filling bottled beer from the Lucerne brewery Eichhof since 2013 . The luxury beer Meisterbräu with 6 percent alcohol by volume was no longer produced in 2013 after around 40 years.
