Paul Cadmus

Paul Cadmus (born December 17, 1904 in New York City , † December 12, 1999 in Weston , Connecticut ) was an American painter .

Live and act

He became known for paintings and drawings of naked male figures. His works combine elements of eroticism and social criticism to achieve a magical realism (known as style) . Cadmus used the difficult egg tempera technique for his paintings . In 1934, Cadmus painted The Fleet's In! while working for the WPA's Public Works of Art Project . This painting, which shows sailors, women, and a gay couple, sparked an outcry among the public and was removed from the Corcoran Gallery of Art exhibitaway. But this public outrage gave his career a leap forward. He lived with his significant other, Jon Anderson, who became the subject of many of his works, for over 35 years. He died in 1999, five days before his 95th birthday, at his home in Weston , Connecticut .
