Leonard Sargeant (born March 17, 1793 in Dorset , Vermont , † June 18, 1880 in Johnstown , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1846 to 1848 .

Life

Sargeant was born in Dorset, Vermont. He studied law and became a lawyer in Manchester with Richard Skinner . He was also a farmer and Vice President of the Vermont Agricultural Society. He was a member of the Whig Party and held various public offices such as executor , judge , prosecutor , postmaster and justice of the peace . He was a member of the Vermont Council of Censors in 1827 and a delegate to the Vermont founding assembly in 1836.

His legal career included the notable defense of brothers Stephen and Jesse Boorn, convicted of killing their brother-in-law Russell Colvin and sentenced to life imprisonment (Jesse) and death (Stephen). Colvin went missing in his hometown of Manchester. Many years later, Colvin returned to Vermont to prove he was still alive. He had moved to New Jersey after an argument with the Boorns and changed his name. The case of the Boorn brothers was the first known example of a miscarriage of justice relating to murder in the United States.

Sargeant was an MP in the Vermont House of Representatives and the Vermont Senate in the 1830s and 1840s. From 1846 to 1848 he was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont.

He worked as a lawyer until the 1870s. After retiring from office and business, he moved to his daughter's home in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He died there on June 18, 1880. His grave is in Dellwood Cemetery in Manchester.
