James M. Slade

James M. Slade (born September 8, 1812 in Middlebury , Vermont , † April 10, 1875 ibid), was an American politician who was lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1856 to 1857 .

Life

James Madison Slade was born the son of Governor William Slade in Middelbury, where he grew up and attended school. He later became a clothing dealer.

Active in the Know Nothing Party , actually American Party, later in the Vermont branch of the Republican Party , Slade was from 1853 to 1856 clerk in the House of Representatives from Vermont . He was vice governor from 1856 to 1857.

Slade worked for the United States Department of the Treasury in Washington, DC from 1860 to 1863.

He was a Side Judge of Addison County from 1868 to 1870 and a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1871 to 1872.

Slade died in Middlebury on April 10, 1875. His grave is in Middlebury's West Cemetery.

family

His son James M. Slade Junior (1843-1899) was a lawyer and served as Addison County attorney and as a probate judge . He was also a member of the Vermont House of Representatives. From 1870 to 1871, Slade was Junior Secretary for Civil and Military Affairs and First Assistant to Governor John Wolcott Stewart .
