Lebbeus Egerton , the first name is also written as Lebberis , Libbeus or Lebbons , the last name appears in some documents as Edgerton , (born May 4, 1773 in Norwich , Colony of Connecticut , † August 18, 1846 in Randolph , Vermont ) was a Vermonter Militia officer and farmer who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1831 to 1835 .

Life

Lebbeus Egerton was born in Norwich. His family moved to Randolph, Vermont, in the early 1780s. There they ran a farm.

In the British-American War of 1812, Egerton served as a captain , initially in the United States' 31st Infantry Regiment. He was later promoted to command a division of the Vermont Militia at the Battle of Plattsburgh . He later served as adjutant of a regiment .

Egerton was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1825 to 1826 and a delegate to the Vermont Constitutional Convention in 1828. He was the town clerk of Randolph from 1830 to 1833. During his life, Egerton served in various public offices, including as selectman .

As an activist in the anti-Masonic movement in 1831, Egerton became lieutenant governor and held that office until 1835. Since the elections were held in three stages, Egerton did not get the majority required under the Vermont Constitution . Therefore, he was appointed annually by the Vermont General Assembly .

In the early to mid-1830s, Egerton was responsible for designing and overseeing the construction of the second Vermont State House . He was a Senator in the Vermont Senate from 1837 to 1839.

Egerton died in Randolph on August 18, 1846, his grave is in Randolph Center Cemetery.

His house in downtown Randolph is now privately owned.
