Silas Hemenway Jenison

Silas Hemenway Jennison (born May 17, 1791 in Shoreham , Vermont , † September 30, 1849 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of Vermont from 1835 to 1841 .

Early years and political advancement

Silas Jennison had to work on his parents' farm in his youth after the early death of his father. As a result, he only had a few weeks a year to attend school. He then acquired most of the knowledge himself and with the help of private tutors. In addition to his work on the farm, he began a political and legal career.

Jennison became a councilor in his hometown and was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1826 to 1831 . He was also a member of the Vermont Executive Council . He was now a judge in Addison County . In 1835 he became a candidate of the Whig Party for lieutenant governor elected his state.

Vermont governor

After there was no majority in the gubernatorial election of 1835 and the legislature could not agree on a new governor even after more than 60 ballots, it was decided that the new lieutenant governor Jennison should take over this office for a period of one year. In the elections that followed, Jennison himself ran for election and was confirmed in this office until 1840. In 1841 he no longer ran. Thus he was between November 2, 1835 and October 15, 1841 governor of his state. His reign passed without special events.

Another résumé

After the end of his governorship, Jennison was a probate judge until 1847. From 1844 to 1848 he was President of the Agricultural Association in Addison County. Silas Jennison died after a long illness in September 1849. He and his wife Merillai Bush Jennison had two children.
