William C. Kittredge

William Cullen Kittredge (born February 23, 1800 in Dalton , Massachusetts , † June 11, 1869 in Rutland , Vermont ) was an American politician and lawyer , who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1852 to 1853 .

Life

William Kittredge was born in Berkshire County , Massachusetts. He belonged to the Phi Beta Kappa and graduated from Williams College in 1821. There he earned his Masters in 1824 , then he studied law in Northampton . He practiced in Kentucky and Ohio before settling in Fair Haven in 1824 .

In addition to his practice as a lawyer, Kittredge has been involved in several company formations, including serving as the first president of the National Life Insurance Company and partner in a successful marble company.

Kittredge spent eight years in the Vermont House of Representatives , including two years as a speaker. He has also served in the Vermont Senate and as a District Attorney for Rutland County, as well as an ide Judge and District Court Judge. Kittredge was successful for the Whig Party in the election to lieutenant governor in 1852, and held that office from 1852 to 1853.

After retiring from office, he continued to work as a lawyer in Fair Haven. Kittredge died in Rutland on June 11, 1869 on his way to Bennington to take up the post of US Internal Revenue Assessor. His grave is in West Street Cemetery in Fair Haven.
