John S. Burgess

John S. Burgess (born May 10, 1920 in New York City , † September 20, 2007 in Keene , New Hampshire ) was an American politician and lawyer who was lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1971 to 1975 .

Life

John Stuart "Jack" Burgess was born in New York City. During World War II he was a navigator in the United States Army Air Corps . He returned to active service and took part in the Korean War. He reached the rank of major in the Air Force Reserve Command .

Burgess graduated from the University of Vermont and also earned a law degree from Northeastern University in 1949. He then went to practice as a lawyer in Brattleboro . He served as District Attorney for Windham County from 1952 to 1957. He also held various offices in Brattleboro. He was a town agent, town attorney and justice of the peace.

As a member of the Republican Party of Vermont, Burgess was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives in 1966 . He was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee before becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Burgess won the election to lieutenant governor in 1970 and held this post for two terms, from 1971 to 1975.

He lost the election for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1974 to Jim Jeffords .

After his tenure as lieutenant governor he worked again as a lawyer and in other positions in the city council of Brattleboro. Burgess died in Keene, New Hampshire on September 20, 2007. His grave is in Brattleboro's Meeting House Hill Cemetery.
