Lyman G. Hinckley

Lyman G. Hinckley (born April 13, 1832 in Post Mills , Vermont , † November 26, 1887 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American politician and lawyer , who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1874 to 1876 .

Life

Lyman Gillett Hinckley was born in Post Mills, Vermont. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1856 , studied law with MP William Hebard and Lt. Burnham Martin , and was admitted to the bar in 1860.

As a member of the Republican Party , Hinckley was a clerk in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1856 to 1859 . He was the Orange County clerk from 1860 until his death. He was a justice of the peace in Chelsea and chairman of the town council. He was a member of the House of Representatives from Vermont from 1862 to 1863 and from 1868 to 1870. From 1872 to 1874 he was a Senator in the Vermont Senate and also Senate President. He was then elected Lieutenant Governor of Vermont and held this office from 1874 to 1876. He returned to the House of Representatives from 1878 to 1880.

Hinckley died suddenly on November 26, 1887 while visiting his sister in Boston for Thanksgiving . His grave is in Chelsea's Highland Cemetery.
