Charles H. Stearns
Charles H. Stearns (born February 7, 1854 in Johnson , Vermont , † October 12, 1936 in Medfield , Massachusetts ) was an American businessman and politician who was lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1904 to 1906 .
Life
Charles Henry Stearns was born in Johnson, Vermont. There he also attended school and graduated from the Vermont seminary in Montpelier .
Stearns entered the family business. This dealt with the production of churns and other wood products. The company expanded into other areas of the timber business such as timber harvesting in Canada. He also became active in other business areas, including a haberdashery, granite quarry, and stone products company. He was director and president of the Union Bank and Trust Company of Morrisville .
Stearns was active in government and politics. This included chairing the Vermont Republican Party in Lamoille County and the Treasurer in Johnson Town. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1886 to 1887 and in the Vermont Senate from 1888 to 1889 . In 1904 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. He held this office until 1906.
He was married to Viola H. Stearns (1856–1926). The couple had a son, C. Arthur Stearns (1883-1919).
Stearns died in Medfield, Massachusetts on October 12, 1936. His grave is in Johnson's Lamoille View Cemetery.
Others
The CH Stearns Company is still active in Johnson. She runs a convenience shop and a gas station . One of his holdings, Parker and Stearns , is still a supplier of accessories and materials for construction .
The Stearns Hall of Johnson State College was named after him.
