The county has an area of 1,201 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Orleans County , Caledonia County , Washington County , Chittenden County, and Franklin County .

Lamoille County was formed on October 26, 1835 from parts of Chittenden County, Franklin County, Orleans County, and Washington County.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 23,233 people. There were 9,221 households and 5,984 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.31% white , 0.33% African American , 0.45% American Indian , 0.37% Asian American , 0.03% Pacific islander and 0.12% percent from other races ; 1.39% were from two or more races. 0.77% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
Of the 9,221 households, 32.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.40% were married couples living together, 8.90% were single mothers. 35.10% were not families. 25.00% were single households and 8.10% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 10.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,356 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,620. Males had a median income of $ 30,848 versus $ 24,444 for females.
