history

Morrisville 1889

The town was proclaimed for settlement on November 6, 1780, and on August 24, 1781, 66 settlers were assigned under the direction of Moses Morse . The first reclamation took place from the spring of 1790; a landowner traveled from Bennington and worked his land from a friend's existing farm in neighboring Hyde Park during the week. In the winter he returned to Bennington and brought his family in the spring of 1791, but went back to Bennington again in the winter. From 1792 more colonists followed and together they built a permanent house. This was the first time that the community was permanently settled. In 1796 the town became administratively independent. In 1798 the first sawmill was built. The community remained largely agricultural.

From 1872 the town was opened up by the Lunenburg – Maquam railway line , but this did not change its rural character. After the end of passenger traffic in 1956 and freight traffic in 1994, Vermont State Route 12 , which ends in Morrisville , Vermont State Route 100 and Morrisville-Stowe State Airport are the town's main transport links.
