Joseph Sacket and others received the grant. Settlement of Underhill began in 1786 after the area was surveyed in 1785. On March 9, 1795, the town's constituent assembly took place. In 1839 the western part of Mansfield was added to the town of Underhill.

Even if the name Underhill could go back to the place name under the hill is meant the location below Mount Mansfield, the name of the town either goes back to Benjamin Underhill or Underhill Horten, or both. Several members of the Underhill family have received grants from the Onion River Company . Apparently neither Wentworth nor the grant takers knew the area. Mansfield Town was founded on the same day as Underhill. This was divided in half by Mount Mansfield and it was not possible to get from one side of the town to the other. Mansfield was divided in 1839 and the western part of Underhill and the eastern part of Stowe were added.

Underhill was on the 1877 from 1938 operated railway line Burlington Cambridge Junction .
