history

The area was proclaimed settlement on June 8, 1763 by Benning Wentworth , belonged to the state of New Hampshire until Vermont was founded in 1777 , but was not permanently inhabited until 1782. Early settlers included William Irish, Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylor, and Thomas Dewey. It was named after a relative of Wentworth, William Fitzwilliam, the Viscount Milton. The grant for Milton covered an area of 23,040 acres (approximately 93 km²). Much of Milton's early records were lost in the 1927 New England Flood .

The residents of the area called their place, however, "Checkerberry", after an evergreen plant that grows frequently in the area. Opened in 1890, the post office bore the official name of the main town, Milton Center, but when it closed six years later due to inefficiency, the locals reverted to their self-chosen name. It was not until the 1920s that the official name finally caught on.

In the years after it was founded, the settlers lived primarily from the timber industry, which changed to dairy farming around 1840. Milton's dairy farms are still widespread today, although the area has largely become a residential and sleeping city for commuters from the Burlington metropolitan area. An industrial park established a few years ago is intended to attract small-scale industry, with so far only moderate success.

religion

Milton's religious life is shaped by five parishes: a Roman Catholic , a Baptist , the Methodist , the Assemblies of God and the United Church of Christ .
