Geographical location

Essex is centrally located in Chittenden County, around 12 km east of Lake Champlain and around 22 km west of Mount Mansfield on the western edge of the Green Mountains . The Indian Brook Reservoir is the largest lake in the area of Town. To the south, the Winooski River forms the border with Burlington to the east and Williston to the west. The area of ​​the town is flat, the highest point is the 294 m high Saxon Hill

history

After the official conquest of the area on June 7, 1763, the settlement began hesitantly; only ten years later did the first settlers settle here permanently. From 1784 the population grew rapidly, benefiting from the fertile, moderately hilly land, the watercourses that were well suited for the construction of mills and the forestry possibilities. The then settlement center was at Essex Center, but moved to Hubes Falls, now Essex Junction , when a train station was built there in 1850. This station became the junction of several railway lines in 1853, which led to a high level of awareness and easy accessibility of the place.

A dispute over the need for sidewalks and sewers for Essex Junction, which the residents of the surrounding area did not want to pay, led to the economic independence of the place as a village in 1892. The remaining agricultural town was thus cut off from its business center. A multi-day agricultural fair was set up in Essex Center, the second main town in the area, in 1913, but moved to Essex Junction in 1922 and is held there annually to this day under the name "Champlain Valley Exposition".

Efforts have been made since 1955 to bring the two areas together again, but so far such a union has always been rejected by one of the two sides in several votes. A vote in 2006 in which a majority from both areas voted in favor of a merger was overturned immediately by another new election forced by a referendum in Essex Junction.

Essex is well connected to Vermont's transportation routes due to its peripheral location in the Burlington metropolitan area . Burlington International Airport is six kilometers south-east ; Interstate 89 passes seven kilometers south and connects Essex to the west with New York State and east to the centers of New England and the east coast. Vermont Route 12 connects Essex with the ski resorts of Jericho and Underhill, Vermont Route 128 leads to the northern towns of Franklin County and the Canadian border.

education

Essex and Westford are part of the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union . There are two school districts in Essex , the Essex Town School District and the Essex Junction School District

The Essex Junction School District is part of the Chittenden County Supervisory Union and includes Essex High School , Summit Street School , Fleming School , Albert D. Lawton School , Hiawatha School , and the Center for Technology, Essex and Westford School .

For Essex Town School District include the Essex Elementary , Founders Memorial School and Essex Middle School . The Essex High School as a secondary school visiting students from the Town of Essex, also from South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero and Georgia, but not students from Essex Junction, Westford, or Isle La Motte. These attend the Westford School .

The Essex Free Library is part of the Town of Essex and is located on Browns River Road. The Brownell Library is in Essex Junction . It was founded in 1897. A donation from the businessman Samul Brownell enabled a new building to be built in the 1920s.
