Geographical location

Jericho is located in the east of Chittenden County, in the western foothills of the Green Mountains , about 18 kilometers east of the shores of Lake Champlain in the immediate vicinity of the Burlington metropolitan area . Mount Mansfield rises 15 kilometers east of the main town and serves as a state forest on the one hand and as a cross-country skiing area on the other. The most important watercourse is the Winooski River , which flows through the area of ​​the settlement from east to west and takes up the water of many small, mostly nameless tributaries that flow from the surrounding mountains. The surface of the town is slightly hilly. The highest point is the 315 m high Laisdell Hill .

Jericho was proclaimed on June 7, 1763 by Benning Wentworth as part of New Hampshire with an area of ​​6 by 6 miles, corresponding to the usual 23,040 acres (about 93.2 km²) for settlement. The first settlers, three families, are mentioned for 1774, but they left the unsafe area again when the war of independence broke out. Settlement was not resumed until 1783; a first list from 1785 contains the names of six "freemen", ie men entitled to vote. The constituent community meeting took place on March 22, 1786, a representative for the Vermont Parliament was on November 29, 1786 for the first time.

By 1825, the population of the place had grown so much that the residents of Jericho built a building for a secondary school, the Jericho Academy , which did not start teaching until March 1827 and lasted until 1845. While the primary schools only offered lessons in the winter half of the year in the first decades of settlement, the Academy gave lessons all year round.

The area was sparsely populated and was primarily used for forestry and forestry. The many watercourses that arise in the area around Mount Mansfield and flow into the Winooski River led to the construction of a large number of water mills, which were initially mainly used as sawmills, later also for small industries of all kinds. One of them, the "Red Mill" from 1848, is preserved in the center of Jericho and in 1972 was declared a National Historic Site .

Since the 1930s there have been efforts to develop the place into a tourist center. Back then, in the course of combating the effects of the were world economic crisis at Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest mountain, campsites and huts created. Together with the nearby Burlington International Airport and the well-developed road network here, Jericho has developed into a winter sports center, especially since the 1970s. Large biathlon competitions have been held in the Jericho area since the late 1990s .

Jericho station was on the Burlington – Cambridge Junction railway, which operated from 1877 to 1938 .

In the early days of settlement, almost all of New England's major churches were represented by believers in Jericho. Above all, be Congregationalists , Baptists , Universalists and Methodists called, built up their own in communities and partly own churches.
