Westford is a town in Chittenden County of the state of Vermont in the United States , with a population of 2,029 (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location

Westford is north of Chittenden County, on the western edge of the Green Mountains , on the border with Franklin County . The area of ​​the town is hilly and the highest point is the 501 m high Stewart Hill. The Browns River flows centrally through the town in a northerly direction and flows a little further north into the Lamoille River . There are several smaller rivers and streams that drain the town, but only smaller lakes, the largest of which is Westford Pond .

history

Westford was proclaimed on June 8, 1763 by Benning Wentworth as part of New Hampshire with an area of ​​6 by 6 miles, corresponding to the usual 23,040 acres (about 93.2 km²). The settlement of Westford began immediately after the American Revolutionary War .

The name came about because Westford was the most westerly town that was proclaimed with three other towns on the same day. Many of the Westford Grant recipients were also beneficiaries of the Underhill Grant, which was declared the same day. A special name is Number Eleven Hill. No other mountain in Vermont has only been given a number.

religion

The Congregational , Baptist, and Methodist Churches were organized in Westford between 1798 and 1821. Each had a building in the village.

The Vermont State Route 15 runs north-south through the eastern part of the Town. It connects Westford with Underhill in the south and Cambridge in the north. Central, also in a north-south direction, is Vermont State Route 128 , from Fairfax in the north to Essex in the south.

There's no hospital in Westford. The University of Vermont Medical Center , Burlington, is the closest hospital.

Westford and Essex are part of the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union . In Westford, Westford School and Underhill ID School offer education from pre-school through eighth grade.

The Westford Public Library is located on the Vermont Route in Westford.
