history

The city was named after a local Abenaki place name, which means something like: "Where the wild onions grow" . Remains of a deposit of a migrating clan near the river bank, dated to around 3000 BC. BC, are considered the oldest archaeological site in this area. The first historical settlement of the area took place around 1770; At that time, a fortified wooden house was built on this site by Ira Allen , which under the name Fort Frederick served as a defensive structure for first settlers, as a sales station and as a branch of the Onion River Company . The fort never had to prove its military values, but was seen by the settlers as an important reason to settle in the area. After the war of liberation, the Winooski River was dammed at this point and sawmills built on both banks. Until the middle of the last century, the water power of the waterfalls and rapids located here was used to operate various mills.

Today's city was spun off from Chittenden County on March 7, 1922 and declared an independent city . This date can be found in the city coat of arms together with a bunch of onions. This makes Winooski the youngest administrative unit in Vermont.

When the closure of several hydro-powered wool combing mills in 1953 destroyed around 1000 jobs and thus also burdened the surrounding communities, this became the reason for the establishment of a joint marketing company for the surrounding communities, which shortly afterwards agreed with IBM to build a semiconductor factory at Essex Junction . Today, this plant is Vermont's largest employer with 6,500 employees.

religion

Religious communities in the city are one Methodist , one Baptist and two Roman Catholic churches .
