South Burlington is a city in Chittenden County of the US state Vermont in the United States and with 17,904 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census) the third largest city in Vermont.

Geographical location
South Burlington is located on the east bank of Lake Champlain , about 65 km northwest of Montpelier , 110 km north of Rutland and 150 km southeast of Montréal and is part of the industrial metropolitan area of Burlington . The Winooski River flows along the northern city limits . The landscape is flat with no significant elevations.

history
The place was originally founded as part of the town of Burlington in 1763, but when the then Villages Burlington was spun off to an independent city in 1864, South Burlington became independent as the remainder of the rural structure. Only with the development of Burlington to the industrial center of Vermont after the Second World War did the appearance of the community change until it was declared a city in 1971.
As part of the metropolitan area around Burlington, South Burlington is very popular. Between 1980 and 2010 the population increased by about 2/3 from 10,679 to 17,904 inhabitants; compared to 2000 there was an increase of 13.2%. By comparison, Vermont's population grew by around 3% between 2000 and 2010. The place serves primarily as a dormitory for Burlington, but also has some industrial settlements itself. The ice cream manufacturer Ben & Jerry’s was founded here, but has since moved to Waterbury , and a local airline has its headquarters here.

A Catholic and a Reformed Jewish congregation are represented in South Burlington , and there are also congregations of the Assemblies of God , Methodists and Episcopals .

South Burlington is crossed by Interstate 89 ; the Interstate 189 , a short connection to US Highway 7 , branches off here. Even the US Highway 2 runs through the area. Burlington International Airport is located on the northeastern outskirts , about 3.5 kilometers from the city center of South Burlington. A direct rail connection no longer exists, although the Bellows Falls – Burlington railway runs through the city; from nearby Burlington, however, the Ethan Allen Express runs daily to New York City .

South Burlington does not have its own hospital. The University of Vermont Medical Center , Burlington, is the closest hospital to South Burlington.
education
There are several schools in South Burlington, three elementary schools, the Chamberlin School , Orchard School and the Rick Marcotte Central School . There is also a middle school, Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School and South Burlington High School .
The South Burlington Community Library was established in October 1971. It should serve as a library for both schools and the city. She is in South Burlington High School.
