Austrocylindropuntia subulata grows tree-shaped, is richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 4 meters. The elongated, somewhat brittle shoots are up to 50 centimeters long. The rhomboid to egg-shaped cusps on it are clearly demarcated from each other and are in a few spiral rows. Some of the awkward, persistent leaf rudiments are up to 12 centimeters long. Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Austrocylindropuntia subulata probably originates from the Peruvian Andean regions, where it is widespread at altitudes above 3000 meters. Today Austrocylindropuntia subulata is also native to Argentina and Bolivia .

It was first described as Pereskia subulata in 1845 by Friedrich Mühlenpfordt . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1942 . Other nomenclature synonyms are Opuntia subulata (Muehlenpf.) Engelm. (1883), Cylindropuntia subulata (Muehlenpf.) FMKnuth (1930) and Maihueniopsis subulata (Muehlenpf.) R. Kiesling (1998). Another synonym is the type species of the genus Opuntia exaltata A. Berger (1912)

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
