Austrocylindropuntia is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Latin noun oyster for "south" and the name of the genus Cylindropuntia , with which some species are similar.
description
The species of the genus Austrocylindropuntia mostly grow shrub-like, but sometimes also tree-like. They form loosely branched shrubs or sometimes dense cushions that reach a height of 0.5 to 5 meters. The cylindrical shoots are sometimes articulated. The late-falling succulent leaves are cylindrical and up to 4 millimeters long. The areoles have glochids , hair and smooth, sheathless thorns .
The yellow, pink or red flowers are up to 8 centimeters long, but have only a short flower envelope . The thick-walled fruits are elliptical and juicy. They contain small to large, spherical to pear-shaped seeds 3.5 to 7 millimeters in length.
