Austrocylindropuntia hirschii is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hirschii honors the German botanist Gerhard Hirsch, who worked together with Werner Rauh at the Botanical Institute in Heidelberg and who accompanied him on his 1954 expedition to Peru.

Austrocylindropuntia hirschii grows prostrate and forms small, dense mats. The spherical to short cylindrical shoot sections have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. They have very elongated humps . The small areoles on it are scattered. The leaf rudiments are up to 5 millimeters long. There are one to three thorns, usually pointing downwards and resting on the shoot surface . Their length is up to 1 centimeter.

The red flowers are up to 3 inches long.

Distribution and systematics

Austrocylindropuntia hirschii is widespread in the Peruvian region of Ancash at altitudes of about 4000 meters.

The first description as Tephrocactus hirschii by Curt Backeberg was published in 1957. Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in 1999 in the genus Austrocylindropuntia . Another nomenclature synonym is Opuntia hirschii (Backeb.) GDRowley (1958).

The species is not well known.
