description

Austrocylindropuntia verschaffeltii grows shrubby and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters. The ellipsoidal to cylindrical, slender shoot sections are bumpy and up to 10 centimeters long. At their tip they sometimes branch heavily with numerous, spherical side shoots. The awl, rapidly sloping to fairly long persistent leaf rudiments are 5 to 30 millimeters long. From the small areoles arise up to seven needle-like, not very strong, straight or curved and occasionally interlocking variable thorns that are up to 6 centimeters long.

The numerous, copper to orange-red flowers are up to 4 centimeters long. The pericarpel, which has only a few areoles, is somewhat bristly at the top. The thornless fruits are ellipsoidal to pear-shaped. They contain seeds that are compressed on the sides .
