James Butts

James Butts ( James Aaron Butts ; born May 9, 1950 in South Los Angeles ) is a former American triple jumper .

In 1972 he became NCAA champion starting at the University of California, Los Angeles .

In 1976 he won the US eliminations for the Olympic Games in Montreal . There he won the silver medal with 17.18 m behind Viktor Saneyev from the Soviet Union (17.29 m) and in front of the Brazilian João Carlos de Oliveira (16.90 m).

At the Pan American Games in San Juan in 1979 , he won bronze.

In 1978 he was US champion, in 1976 and 1977 US runner-up.

He set his personal best of 17.24 m on June 29, 1978 in Helsinki .
