Ambroise Colette Alexandre Verschaffelt (born December 11, 1825 in Ghent ; † May 16, 1886 there ) was a Belgian gardener . The main horticultural field of his family were the camellias . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Verschaff. "

Life

From 1850 Ambroise Verschaffelt ran the large gardening business founded by his grandfather Pierre Antoine and continued by his father Alexandre Jacques in the Rue du Chaume in Ghent, which he sold to Jean Linden from Brussels in 1869 . Verschaffelt founded the influential horticultural magazine L'Illustration horticole in Ghent in 1854 . He introduced numerous new species and varieties of camellia into the trade. The family business Verschaffelt published the Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias between 1848 and 1860 , which continued Lorenzo Berlèses book Iconographie du genre Camellia with its numerous illustrations .

Verschaffelt died in his house at 98 Chaussee de Courtrai. He probably suffered from cancer of the tongue .

Verschaffelt was bearer of the Belgian Order of Leopold , the Croix-Civique and the Order of St. Maurice and Lazare , the French Legion of Honor , the Russian Order of Saint Anne , the Ottoman Mecidiye Order , the Württemberg Order of Frederick , the Baden Order of the Zähringer Lion , the Order of Adolph of Nassau , the Grand Duke of Hesse and the Duke of Nassau and Oldenburg.

Hermann Wendland named the genus Verschaffeltia palm in his honor . He was honored with the naming of plant species and varieties, including the widespread Schiefteller 'Ambroise Verschaffelt' and - following the custom of the time - with the camellia named in honor of his wife 'Madame Ambroise Verschaffelt'.
