Life

Jean Linden studied in Brussels and in 1835, at the age of 19, was sent on an expedition by the Belgian government on which he toured the countries of Central and South America . At times he traveled with the famous researcher Alexander von Humboldt . During the three trips, together for about 10 years, he sent a number of previously unknown plants to Europe.

After the end of his travel activities (1845) he first returned to Luxembourg. In 1851, however, he returned to Brussels, where he founded the company L'Horticole Coloniale . He had greenhouses built in Ghent and Brussels in order to be able to cultivate and breed the particularly sensitive tropical species. His collection of orchids created in this way became world famous. He sold orchids all over Europe, right up to the court of the Russian tsars . One orchid variety bears his name today: Lindensis . Together with his son Lucien , he was the author of a richly illustrated book on orchids, which had long been a standard work. Among other things, he put the well-known collection of Jean-Pierre Pescatore on his castle of La Celle-Saint-Cloud .

From 1851 to 1861 he was director of the zoological and botanical garden of Brussels Parc Léopold , where a monument still commemorates him today.

The Promenade des Anglais in Nice was laid out with palm trees from his cultivation. For a while, Jean Linden was also Consul General of Luxembourg in the USA .

Jean Linden died in Brussels at the age of 80.
