Austrocylindropuntia punta-caillan is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet punta-caillan refers to the occurrence of the species on the Punta Caillan in the Cordillera Negra in central Peru.

description

Austrocylindropuntia punta-caillan grows small, is hardly branched at the base and forms arched cushions. The cylindrical, glossy medium green shoot sections have elongated humps and are up to 10 centimeters long. The somewhat rounded leaf rudiments are up to 1 centimeter long. The two to six reddish brown thorns are up to 1.5 inches long.

The flowers are red.

Distribution and systematics

Austrocylindropuntia punta-caillan is common in the highlands of the Peruvian region of Ancash .

The first description as Tephrocactus punta-caillan by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg was published in 1957. Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in 1999 in the genus Austrocylindropuntia . Another synonym is Opuntia punta-caillan (Rauh & Backeb.) GDRowley (1958).
