Austrocylindropuntia vestita is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet vestita is derived from the Latin word vestitus for 'clothed' and refers to the hair-covered shoots of the species.

description

Austrocylindropuntia vestita grows shrubby and branched from the base with few ascending branches. The upright shoots , which are not divided into segments, narrow towards their tip. They are not humped, up to 50 centimeters long and 3 centimeters in diameter. The awl, somewhat flexible, long perennial leaf rudiments are up to 30 millimeters long. From the small areoles , covered with interwoven hairs, arise numerous, fine, brownish thorns that are 1 to 2.5 centimeters long.

The red flowers are 3.5 inches long. The pericarpel, which is covered with numerous small areoles, is hairy. The horny, spherical fruits are red to cloudy purple in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Austrocylindropuntia vestita is distributed in Bolivia in the departments of La Paz , Cochabamba , Chuquisaca , Potosí and probably Tarija as well as in Argentina in the province of Jujuy at altitudes of 1500 to 3200 meters.

The first description as Opuntia vestita by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck was published in 1845. Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1942 . Other nomenclature synonyms are Pseudotephrocactus vestitus (Salm-Dyck) Frič (1933), Cylindropuntia vestita (Salm-Dyck) Backeb. (1936) and Maihueniopsis vestita (Salm-Dyck) R. Kiesling (1998).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
