Austrocylindropuntia pachypus is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pachypus is derived from the Greek words pachys for 'thick' and pous for 'foot' and refers to the long, thickened pericarpel of the flowers.

Austrocylindropuntia pachypus grows individually, has little or no branching at the base. A few twigs are formed higher up on the shoot, reaching heights of up to 1 meter. The shoot sections have numerous, conspicuous, spirally arranged humps and have a diameter of up to 8 centimeters. Up to 20 or more wiry thorns up to 2 centimeters long arise from the large, closely spaced areoles located on it . Some of the central spines are longer.

The bright red flowers are up to 7 inches long. Your pericarpel looks like a small side shoot.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Austrocylindropuntia pachypus is widespread in the Peruvian regions of Ancash and Lima on the Pacific Andean slopes at altitudes of 1350 meters to 2400 meters.

The first description as Opuntia pachypus by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1904. Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1942 . Further nomenclature synonyms are Cylindropuntia pachypus (K.Schum.) Backeb. (1936) and Maihueniopsis pachypus (K.Schum.) R. Kiesling (1998).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
