description

Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica grows shrubby or tree-shaped, is loosely to densely branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 4 meters and more. The not fragile, dark green shoot sections appear laterally from older shoots. They are striking spiral rhomboid humped and up to 25 centimeters long and longer. Weak, inconspicuous glochids 1 to 2 millimeters in length arise from the areoles on them . The leaf rudiments are subpulate and up to 10 millimeters long. There are two to six (rarely up to eight) thorns . They are protruding, straight, round or slightly flattened and sometimes slightly downy-haired. Their length is about 1 centimeter, rarely up to 3 centimeters.

The red flowers are 5 to 7 inches long. The elongated pericarpel is covered with areoles at the base that carry glochids. Occasionally it is hairy. The ellipsoid to urn-shaped fruits are up to 9 centimeters long.
