Austrocylindropuntia shaferi is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet shaferi honors the American botanist John Adolph Shafer (1863–1918).

description

Austrocylindropuntia shaferi grows upright and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters and more. The shoots are only slightly divided into cylindrical to somewhat clubbed, indistinctly bumpy sections of up to 15 centimeters in length and a diameter of 3 centimeters. The leaf rudiments are up to 6 millimeters long. Up to 15 needle-like, not very strong, spreading thorns that are up to 5 centimeters long arise from the closely spaced, small areoles . Sometimes hair or bristles are also formed.

The deep red flowers are up to 3 inches long. The pear-shaped pericarpel is covered with hair and has no thorns. The spherical, bright red fruits are covered with glochids and hair. They are up to 1.5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Austrocylindropuntia shaferi is widespread in Bolivia in the Chuquisaca and Potosí departments and in Argentina in the Jujuy province at altitudes of 2500 to 3500 meters.

The first description as Opuntia shaferi by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1919. Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1951 . Further nomenclature synonyms are Cylindropuntia shaferi (Britton & Rose) Backeb. (1936), Austrocylindropuntia vestita var. Shaferi (Britton & Rose) F. Ritter (1980) and Maihueniopsis shaferi (Britton & Rose) R. Kiesling (1998).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
