history
The islands in Lake Champlain were, as various sites prove, inhabited for several thousand years when the French began colonizing from the north, today's Canada, from 1734. At that time, the area of the Big Islands was still intended for unified administration. After the conquest of the area by the British and the later independence of the United States, this division changed: the area was divided into the peninsula of today's Alburgh and the three large islands in the lake. The area Two Heros , which was divided into the areas North Hero , Middle Hero and South Hero in 1798 , was advertised for settlement in 1779; From 1783, under Colonel Ebenezer Allan , the first reclamations were carried out by 365 veterans of the War of Independence , to whom the land had been given. Middle Hero , the northern part of the Grand Isle , on which South Hero is also located, was co-administered by South Hero until 1810, but then independently under the name Grand Isle .
The origin of the initial name Two Heros is not clear; mostly Ethan Allen and Samuel Herrick, who were also among the first settlers, are associated with it. Occasionally, Ethan's brother Ira , also one of the first settlers, is named instead of Samuel Herrick .
The residents of the district live primarily from agriculture (South Hero is particularly known for its apples) and summer tourism, which results from the very good transport links of the place and the fishing and fishing opportunities on the island. In addition, there are some small marinas in the island's bays that are used intensively.
religion
Two parishes (a Roman Catholic and a United Church of Christ parish ) are located in the village.
