Morrisville is a village in the town of Morristown in Lamoille County , Vermont , United States with 1958 residents (2010 census). Morrisville is one of several settlement centers in the town on which it is politically and administratively dependent ( village ). Most of the town's public bodies are located in the municipality.

Geographical location

Morrisville is located in the northeast of the town of Morristown, in the center of the Green Mountains on a bend in the Lamoille River , a little east of some rapids, the Cadys Falls , whose water power was used by some mills before industrialization.

history

The town was sold to settlers in 1781, but the place only came into being with the first permanent settlements from around 1792; an exact date of establishment is not documented. The Lunenburg – Maquam line reached Morrisville on December 31, 1872; until the shutdown of passenger traffic in 1956 there was a station in the village. After various accidents due to bad tracks and accidents, Morrisville was no longer served by freight trains from 1994; the line was finally closed in 2004 from St. Johnsbury . The former railway line is now partly used for tourism by hiking and riding trails.

Parts of the city center have been on the list of the National Register of Historic Places since 1983, and three buildings of the local Peoples Academy since 1996 .

In Morrisville, Vermont's first professional ice hockey team, the Vermont Wild , was based, which only existed in 2011 and was disbanded after just 10 games.

A Methodist church is located in the village. The Morristown Historical Society is based on the town's Main Street and operates a local history museum in an early 19th century house.
