Roger W. Hulburd

Roger W. Hulburd (born October 22, 1856 in Waterville , Vermont , † November 20, 1944 in Hyde Park , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1917 to 1919 .

Life

Roger William Hulburd was born in Waterville, Vermont. He graduated from the People's Academy in Morrisville , graduated from the University of Vermont in 1882, and from Albany Law School in 1887.

Hulburd taught at a school and was the principal of Lamoille Central Academy in Hyde Park, Vermont before he was admitted to the bar in 1887. Then he worked there as a lawyer. He has held various positions including trustee of Lamoille Countys Savings Bank and President of Hyde Park Warehouse Company , in 1890 he was Postmaster of Hyde Park.

A member of the Republican Party of Vermont, Hulburd was District Attorney for Lamoille County from 1894 to 1896 and a member of the Vermont Senate from 1896 to 1897. From 1896 to 1906 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vermont Industrial School .

Hulburd was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1906 to 1908 and served on the Vermont Penal Board from 1906 to 1910 . As a delegate, he attended the national assemblies of the Republican Party in 1904 and 1908.

In 1916 he won the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor of Vermont against John E. Weeks , who was governor of Vermont from 1927 to 1931. Hulburd was elected lieutenant governor at a time when Republican candidates were sure to win the Vermont public election. His tenure lasted from 1917 to 1919.

Hulburd was an active member of the Vermont Bar Association and served as chair of the admissions committee for several years.

Hulburd died in Hyde Park on November 20th, and his grave is in Hyde Park's Village Cemetery.

He was married to Mabel Noyes Hulburd (1859-1952). The couple had three children. The son Benjamin N. Hulburd (1898–1964) was also an attorney and Chief Justice at the Vermont Supreme Court .
