The Grand Casino Bern is one of the eight A casinos in Switzerland . It is located on the 5th floor of the Kursaal Bern at the northern end of the Kornhausbrücke bridge in the Altenberg district across from Bern's old town .

history

Since 1925, the operation of casinos has been prohibited in Switzerland. In 1993 the people and the cantons removed the gambling ban from the constitution by a large majority. In the next seven years, the federal government created the legal basis for casinos. On April 1, 2000, the Casino Act and its implementing decrees came into force. In October 2001 the Federal Council granted Grand Casino Kursaal Bern AG an A license for the next 20 years. It opened its doors to the public on July 6, 2002. In 2007, Grand Casino Bern was the first casino in the world to be awarded the Good Privacy seal of approval. After extensive renovation and new construction work, the Grand Casino Bern was enlarged by a third in 2012.

Game operation

The Grand Casino Bern has 14 gaming tables (including Black Jack , American Roulette and various poker variants ) and around 350 slot machines. The number of visitors amounts to around 300,000 guests per year.

The federal government levies a special tax on the income of Swiss casinos . The basis of assessment is the gross gaming revenue (BSE). At casinos with an A license, the taxes flow directly into the AHV compensation fund. The tax rate is progressive and is between 40 and 80 percent. The casino tax of the Grand Casino Bern amounted to CHF 25.2 million in 2013 (approx. 46.6% of the BSE).
