Terry Gordini (born June 22, 1979 in Ravenna ) is an Italian boxer . In 2012 she became vice world champion of amateur boxers in the weight class up to 54 kg.

Career

Terry Gordini's boxer career is very unusual. She started out playing volleyball in her hometown of Ravenna since she was a teenager . Then, at the age of 25, she started boxing at a family gym in Ravenna. Her first trainer was her father Bartholomäus (Meo) Gordini. After joining the national team, Caesar Frontaloni became their coach.

In 2007 she took part for the first time in the weight class up to 52 kg in an Italian championship and won a medal with third place. In 2008 she achieved the same success, although she had to accept only a very narrow point defeat (17:18) in the semifinals against Sara Carlini. In 2009 Terry Gordini reached the semi-finals again at the Italian championship in the weight class up to 51 kg. But she missed there with a very narrow point defeat against Simona Lucarno (3: 3+) again to make it into the final battle.

Due to good performances in the national elimination, she was sent to an international championship for the first time in September 2010. That was the world championship in Bridgetown / Barbados. She won there in the weight class up to 51 kg in her first world championship fight against Ping Meng-chieh from Taiwan by points (13: 4). In the round of 16 she lost to Hanne Mäkinen from Finland on points (1: 7). She was eliminated and came in 9th place. In October 2010, she lost at the Italian championship in the weight class up to 51 kg in the quarter-finals against Giacoma Codio on points (13:17).

At the Italian championship in May 2011, she faced in the final of the weight class Valeria Calabrese. This fight was of great importance for both fighters, because the winner should be sent to the world championship in May 2012 in Qinhuangdao / China. At this world championship, the starting places for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , in which women's boxing was in the program in three weight classes (up to 51 kg, up to 60 kg and up to 75 kg), were awarded. Terry Gordini lost the final fight against Valeria Calabrese on points (6:10). But she was sent to the World Championships in Qinhuangdao anyway, but not in the Olympic weight class up to 51 kg, but in the weight class up to 54 kg. Despite her 33 years of age, she was in excellent form at this World Championship and defeated Jenna Puurunen (Finland) on points (14:10), then came to a disqualification win in the 4th round over Csilla Nemedi, Hungary, defeated Alice Kate Aparri, Philippines (+10: 10) and Christina Cruz from the United States (11: 7) on points and faced the Russian Alexandra Kuleschowa in the final . She lost this fight on points (10:19), but could look forward to a World Championship silver medal. Since Valeria Calabrese was eliminated early at this World Cup in the weight category up to 51 kg, the Federazione Pugilistica Italiana was not given a starting place in London.

In September 2012, after the Olympic Games in London, Terry Gordini was the first Italian champion in the weight class up to 54 kg with a point victory over Eva Magno. She also became Italian champion in 2013. In the weight class up to 51 kg, she won the final over Francesca Grubissich by clear points (18: 7).

At the 2014 European Championships in Bucharest, which took place in May, she started in the weight class up to 51 kg and met the strong Polish Tatjana Kob in the round of 16 , against whom she lost just on points (1: 2 RS). At the 2014 World Cup in Jeju / South Korea, she won a medal again in the same weight class. She defeated Irish Magno, Philippines (3-0), Tomoko Kugimiya, Japan (3-0) and Stoyka Petrowa from Bulgaria (3-0) in Jeju. In the semifinals she was defeated by the Englishwoman Lisa Whiteside on points (0: 3).
