history
The field name Altenberg has been known since the 14th century and is derived from the Latin altus mons (high mountain).
Around 1840 the term Altenberg third was created as a name for part of the suburb of Unterau . The Altenberg third also included the Lorraine area . This was separated in the 1860s. Since then, the Altenbergquartier extends northwest to the present Botanical Garden .
The earliest buildings in Altenberg are likely to have been a medieval infirmary and the small Marienthal monastery . In the 16th and especially in the 17th century, building development began after the hospital was removed from the area. Economically, agriculture dominated in Altenberg, especially viticulture, until the vineyards and trotters turned into stately country houses in the 17th century. The most striking of them is the Stürlerhaus (Altenbergstrasse 60) built in 1659, which is known today as the Stürlerspital, as it served the Diakonissenhaus Bern from 1903 to 1918 as a hospital for the mentally ill . A plaque on the house wall reminds of the year 1844, when Sophie von Wurstemberger , the founder of the Diakonissenhaus Bern, started work in the asylum at Aarbergergasse 36 together with a maid. The illustration refers to the biblical legend "The widow's oil" (2 Kings 4, 1-7). The construction of the bridges and footbridges, which instead of older ferry connections connect the quarter with the old town of Bern: the Untertorbrücke , the Altenbergsteg , the Kornhausbrücke , the Lorrainebrücke and from 1858 to 1941 the former railway bridge was important for the development of the Altenberg district .
Neighborhood life
Today's Altenberg lacks a district center; rather, the settlements extend along the entire right bank of the Aare and the steep slope above. Stately buildings on the slope edge form the upper end. The striking corner buildings are the Schönburg in the east and the Kursaal in the west.
After the Altenberg had been used for agriculture for a long time, the service sector dominates today. The Beau-Site Clinic and the Salem Hospital of the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group , several retirement and nursing homes and the Kursaal with casino are particularly significant . The Schönburg was built in 1970 as the seat of the then General Directorate PTT; since Swisscom and Swiss Post became independent in 1998, it has served as the latter's headquarters. This was relocated to the Wankdorf district in spring 2015. The property has been owned by the real estate company Swiss Prime Site (SPS) since 2014. After extensive renovation of the building, a Coop branch, a fitness center and the first Swiss branch of the German design hotel chain Prizeotel have moved into the Schönburg .
With the School of Design in Bern and Biel , one of Bern's vocational schools has its headquarters in Altenberg, more precisely on Schänzlihalde. There are no elementary schools and kindergartens in the neighborhood, but there is a day-care center for small children. Until the end of November 2014, the Altenberg Forum in the building of the former L. Hafen car repair shop was a popular meeting place for cultural events.
