Murifeld is Bern's statistical district 21 in district IV ( Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde ) and at the same time a smaller common area. Other common quarters are Jolimont (south of Buchserstrasse), Solacher / Melchenbühl , Sonnenhof , Weltpost and Wittigkofen . It is the easternmost district of Bern and it forms the city limit to Ostermundigen and Muri-Gümligen . The usual quarter north of Muristrasse borders on Ostring , Jolimont , Wittigkofen , Weltpost , Egghölzli and Elfenau / Brunnadern .
In 2019, 4890 inhabitants lived in the statistical district, of which 3666 were Swiss and 1224 were foreigners. 1418 people live in the smaller common area, 1086 of them Swiss and 332 foreigners.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the area was characterized by estates and agriculture (Wittigkofen, Saaligut, Ougspurgergut). With the construction of the Kirchenfeld Bridge (1883), the prerequisites for an orderly expansion of the city towards Muri and Ostermundigen were created by 1914.
The quarter is still divided into Oberes ( Obers ) and Unteres Murifeld.
Murifeld, together with the Galgenfeld and Freudenberg commercial zone, is one of the quarters with a high relative poverty rate (defined when less than 50% of the median income of the city of Bern (CHF 49,693.00) is earned).
