Waldau is a “ common quarter ” in District IV ( Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde ) and the statistical district of Beundenfeld . It borders on the districts of Hinterer Schermen and the Schermenwald and forms the city boundary to Ostermundigen .
In 2019, 48 residents were registered in the quarter, 18 of them Swiss and 30 foreigners.
It houses clinics and facilities of the University Psychiatric Services Bern (UPD), which was founded in 1855 as an insane, sanatorium and nursing home in Waldau.
The Waldau Chapel serves as an event location for patients, employees and interested people. A psychiatry museum has also been set up there.
As early as 1765, the “out-of-town hospital” was located on the site - at that time it was still outside the city gates. A “ sick house” for the accommodation of lepers and the terminally ill from the 13th century, a “leaf house” set up in 1498 for syphilis patients and a “mad house” set up in 1749 were brought together there and assigned to the Inselspital .
