Breitenrain-Lorraine is one of the six districts of the city of Bern (District V). Nowadays it mainly serves as a residential area. A barracks area, a commercial vocational school and several smaller businesses are also available.
The resident population in 2019 was 25,706, of which 20,953 Swiss and 4,753 foreigners.
Apartments
At the end of 2004 there were 14,581 apartments in the district, which made up almost 20 percent of all apartments in the city of Bern . The distribution of the apartments according to the number of rooms was as follows in December 2004:

bridges
The oldest bridges between the inner city (district I) and district V are the Untertorbrücke from 1487 and the Nydeggbrücke , built between 1840 and 1844 .
The Altenbergsteig was opened in 1857 as a foot connection between the two parts of the city.
The first bridge between Lorraine and the city, known as the Red Bridge , was inaugurated on October 28, 1858. The railroad ran on the upper floor of the bridge, the lower one was for pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles . The construction costs amounted to 114,500 francs.
The Kornhausbrücke was built by resolution of the municipality of Bern on January 13, 1895 and opened on June 18, 1898. It is named after the Berner Kornhaus and leads from Kornhausplatz to Viktoriaplatz in the Breitenrain-Lorraine district.
The 1,100 meter long Lorraine Viaduct , a railway viaduct, was built between 1936 and 1941. He replaced the Red Bridge, which was demolished.
Sports
The Wankdorf stadium (formerly Stade de Suisse) and the PostFinance Arena (formerly Allmend) are the two major stadiums of the city of Bern in Bern's Breitenrain . They are located around two kilometers from the city center and can be reached by tram line 9.
politics
The voting shares of the parties at the election of the city council on November 27, 2016 were: SP 30.9% ( JUSO 3.1%), GB 12.9%, GFL 10.3%, SVP 10.0%, glp 9 , 4%, (of which 1.6% jglp) FDP 8.3% (of which jf 0.8%), AL 3.5% YES! 3.2%, BDP 3.0%, PdA 2.3%, EVP 2.0%, GPB-DA 1.6%, CVP 1.6%, Mir si Bärn 0.5%, EDU 0.5% , SD 0.2%.
In comparison with the city-wide result, the left-wing parties in the Breitenrain-Lorraine district performed above average, with the alternative-oriented district being particularly characterized by good results from the smaller and more radical left-wing forces.
