The library on Guisanplatz (BiG, formerly the Swiss Federal Military Library , EMB) is a specialist library founded in 1848 , today in the Spitalacker district in the city ​​of Bern , Switzerland .

Located on Guisanplatz between the Bern barracks and the Stade de Suisse, it belongs to the General Secretariat of the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and is open to the public. It is the specialist information center of the Swiss Federal Administration for topics such as history , politics , society , law , economics , the armed forces and others.

The library is responsible for the Alexandria network (library network of the Swiss Federal Administration ), coordinates all libraries of the federal administration, ensures close cooperation in the area of ​​information and documentation, and leads the Federal Documentation Conference (DKB).

The director is Daniel Kohler. His predecessor was Jürg Stüssi-Lauterburg from 1984 to 2016 .

The holdings are available to the public. The library is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., with work being allowed throughout midday. Workplaces equipped with PCs are available to customers in the library, and WLAN is available. The Library Am Guisanplatz also offers a search service to which compiles on various topics documentation and research performs. Exhibitions

Publications

The library supports historical and cultural research with its own series of publications. Last but not least, it is ideal for young scientists to publish their work. The series is the continuation of the series of the Federal Military Library and the Historical Service. It has been appearing in a new layout since spring 2013 and offers a broader range of topics. The numbers in the series are supplemented in loose order by articles in numéro S.
