Statistical districts

Länggasse-Felsenau is one of the six districts of the city of Bern (District II). It is located in the north-west of the city and includes the statistical districts (also known as quarters) Engeried , Felsenau , Länggasse , Muesmatt , Neufeld and Stadtbach . Nowadays, the district serves mainly as a residential area (apartments from villa-like buildings to workers' settlements to old people's homes, many restaurants and shops along the main axis Länggassstrasse), as a place of education (university and many other schools) and as a recreational area ( Bremgartenwald and Engehpeninsel ). The Tiefenau Hospital has been located in the Tiefenau district since 1913 .

The resident population in 2019 was 19,761, of which 15,963 Swiss and 3,798 foreigners.

history

The first country estates and summer houses were built around 1800. In the 19th century exclusive residential quarters were created (at the Grosse Schanze and on the Engeh peninsula). The rear part of the Länggasse was originally characterized by industrial buildings (Tobler, Von Roll), but then developed into a residential area for officials and workers. In 1903 the main building of the University of Bern was completed at the Grosse Schanze . In 1914 the Swiss National Exhibition took place on the Viererfeld in the Engeried district, and in 1928 the Swiss Exhibition for Women's Labor took place there .

  3. In District I, the GFL achieved a slightly higher election target. Its results, however, are not very meaningful, as the majority of the votes there come from people who voted in the polling stations in the old town (or at Bern train station) but live in other quarters.
