The Von Roll Quarter (also known as the vonRoll or vonRoll area ) is located on the former industrial site of the vonRoll company , where iron foundries , steel structures or railway construction used to take place. B. Dolendeckel , railroad tracks and cable cars were produced. In 1865 a bridge building workshop with two large halls was built, where u. a. 1881 to 1883 the metal girders of the Kirchenfeld Bridge were made. In 1872 a foundry and machine factory was built on a neighboring parcel. In 1872 an AG for railway material was added. The Von Roll company in Gerlafingen bought the partly bankrupt companies and the area in 1894 and 1896 respectively. A foundry building was added in 1897 and an assembly hall in 1904, which was expanded in 1909. A power station was added from 1899 to 1910, the administration building at Fabrikstrasse 2 in 1907 and the switch construction hall in 1914/15. Von Roll was one of the ten most important industrial companies in the city ​​of Bern in the 20th century . The crises of the 1970s and 1990s led to the closure of some production sites; the Bern location was closed in 1997.

Today there is a campus of the University of Bern and the University of Education Bern with lecture halls and institutes as well as the vonRoll library. The renovation was completed in 2013. Parts of a listed carpenter's workshop, the preservation of which there were disputes, were included in the project and preserved.

The quarter is a common quarter in district II (Länggasse-Felsenau) and is located in the statistical district of Muesmatt . In the north-west lies the Great Bremgarten Forest , further it borders on the districts Länggasse , Muesmatt , Inselspital and Weyermannshaus .

In 2019 there were 259 residents in the quarter, 220 of them Swiss and 39 foreigners. The residential development is located in the north where there are some more modern row houses with 78 handicapped accessible apartments in the form of a residential park.

In addition, the Bern Job Information Center (BIZ) and some companies (grocer Madame Frigo, the environmental office Meteotest and the software company Data Dynamic) are located in the quarter .

The urban bus line 20 connects the quarter in the north and the post bus line 101 in the south with the center.
