Career information center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A career information center ( BiZ ) is an information center of the Federal Employment Agency (Germany) or as an independent institution of the cantons in Switzerland.

A BiZ provides information on apprenticeships , choice of studies, opportunities for further training , start-ups and the different types of schools . Often a career counselor can be found there or can be reached by telephone. Job information centers are free and can be used without prior registration.

The clientele of a BiZ is diversified: it can be young people before the first career choice, adults who want to reorient themselves, and re-entrants. Parents and teachers can also find out more here. The BIZ provides you with materials to advise students on choosing a career and course of study. In addition to the stationary offer of the BiZ on site, there are also numerous regional events and trade fairs that deal with the topic of career orientation or study choice. Some of these take place directly in the BiZ but also, for example, in schools or in local companies.

The employees of the BiZ are actually employment agency employees, they are trained by the Federal Employment Agency and receive their salary from there. The BIZ can usually be found directly in the respective local employment agency.

The first career information center was opened in Berlin in 1970 , at that time it was already propagated under the acronym BIZ. Today there is at least one BIZ in every region in German-speaking countries. Remote locations are supplied with the BIZ-Mobil (a portable job information center).

Technical Equipment

The career information centers are permanently equipped. In addition to a reference library and free magazines (including the advertising-free magazine abi >> , which the employment agency publishes itself), there are internet workstations. These should make it possible to find out more about the job market or to apply.

Situation in Switzerland

In Switzerland , the career information centers (BIZ) are administered by the cantons. The Swiss Federal Act on Vocational Training (BBG for short) stipulates that vocational training is the responsibility of the federal government, the cantons and organizations in the world of work. However, in keeping with Swiss federalism , the principle of subsidiarity comes into play: the Confederation issues specifications and goals, but implementation is the responsibility of the cantons, which are financially supported by the Confederation through defined lump sums. The BBG stipulates that every canton has to offer public career, study and career advice. They each run their own career information center (BIZ), where visitors can find out about professions, careers, training and further education. Many job, study and career advice centers also have additional offers such as information events, workshops, trade fairs, etc. There are, however, cantonal differences in this regard. In almost all cantons, vocational, study and career advice is part of the cantonal administration. The services are therefore offered and carried out directly by cantonal units. The canton of Aargau is an exception . There, public professional and career advice has been outsourced to an association with a cantonal service mandate.

Canton of Aargau: ask!

The ask! - Advisory services for training and work provide professional, academic and career advice in Aargau on behalf of the canton. Their offer therefore also includes information centers (IZ) at four locations ( Aarau , Baden , Rheinfelden and Wohlen ), advice on youth psychology and advice for teachers. ask! is organized as an association and, in addition to the prescribed (free) services, also provides other (paid) offers for various target groups.
