Name and structure

The origin of the name Bremgarten (also the name of a town in the northeast on the other bank of the Aare ) has not been fully clarified, some hypotheses go back to Celtic origins.

The forest falls in the north with a steep step to the Aare valley and is divided by several short erosion valleys .

A size of 636 hectares is given for the Bremgartenwald. The large and small Bremgarten forest form a contiguous forest area with the oak . The separation from Eichholz is due to the different ownership structures (Bümpliz and Bern). The separation between the large and the small Bremgartenwald occurred through the construction of the Bruggbodenstrasse .

There are two forest houses in the Bremgartenwald. The forest is used for wood production, the area north of the motorway is intended as a recreational forest with a reserve function.

Places and uses

There is a Keltenschanze in the Bremgartenwald , which was only recognized as such at the beginning of the 1960s. The nearby "Nägelischlössli" shows all the characteristics of a Viereckschanze .

The glass well as a broader source lies in the Bremgartenwald. It is used for local recreation and is considered a mystical place of power in esoteric circles.

At the forester's house Eymatt in the northwest of the Bremgarten Forest, an animal center is to be built in an existing clearing after a planning period of around 10 years with numerous objections, construction is scheduled to start in 2020 and all permits are now available.

Well-signposted routes between 1.9 and 17.3 km in length as the “Bremer Loop” are available to joggers and walkers. Various stations for special exercises are available.

The University of Bern maintains an ethological station in the north of the Great Bremgarten Forest in Hasligut an der Aare . About 25 researchers are mainly working on the question of why animals cooperate with one another. Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika , bark beetles and brown rats are used as a model system .

For some time now, so-called forest people have been living in tents in the Bremgarten Forest . In contrast to the built-up area of the city, the city of Bern does not set any time limits for this, but wants the number of people to be limited.

One of the largest wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland and the largest in Bern is located in the north of the Kleiner Bremgartenwald near Neubrügg .

power supply

The energy center forester's house of Energie Wasser Bern on the southern edge of the forest is used for waste incineration and district heating.

A natural gas pipeline with a natural gas pipe storage facility with 12 pipes laid underground, each 224 meters long , runs through the Bremgartenwald . The construction sites have been renatured, only the route signs are clearly visible.

Streets

The Bremgarten circuit , which was used for motorsport from 1931 to 1955 and where the Swiss Grand Prix was held, led through the Bremgarten Forest . The track was closed in 1955 and circuit racing was banned throughout Switzerland for safety reasons. The route was dismantled, some paths or roads still follow the course of that time.

The Autobahn 1 with the exits Bern-Forsthaus and Bern-Neufeld cuts through the Bremgartenwald, as does the Bruggbodenstrasse (Hauptstrasse 236) over the Halenbrücke towards Aarberg.
