The Halenbrücke connects the Bernese Neufeld , about afterwards in the Wohlensee flowing Aare away, with the church Lindacher district Herrenschwanden in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . The bridge is part of Hauptstrasse 236 , which leads from Aarberg east around the Frienisberg to Bern.

Building history

The arch bridge was built from October 1911 to September 1913 and was opened on the 13th of the same month. It relieved the then almost 380-year-old Neubrügg , 800 m upstream, and brought a significant improvement in the traffic connection between the northern agglomeration and the city of Bern.

It is 234.3 m long and the road leads 38 meters above the water. The engineering bureau for reinforced concrete structures J. Bolliger & Co. in Zurich was involved in the construction of the Halen Bridge. This company was also responsible for planning the Gründjitobel viaduct on the Chur – Arosa railway line in 1913/14 .

Total renewal

The increasing volume of traffic and the weak construction of the carriageway slab required a complete renovation of the Halen Bridge in 1992–1993. The deck and the four side arches were demolished. The abutments were replaced and the pillars restored and reinforced. On the main arch over the Aare that has been preserved, the filigree supports were replaced true to the original, as were the four secondary arches and the widened carriageway slab. The light metal railing from an earlier renovation has been replaced by a solid concrete parapet in a similar shape to the original. The four pulpits above the pillars on the banks of the Aare were also restored. With the new abutments and the adapted road connections, the bridge was opened to traffic again on October 29, 1993.

The Halen Bridge is listed in the inventory of historical traffic routes in Switzerland as an object of national importance and is a cultural asset of national importance .
