The inventory of historical traffic routes in Switzerland ( IVS ) has existed since the mid-1980s. Its task is to protect the historical traffic routes in Switzerland and to preserve them for future generations.

construction

The IVS was created on the basis of the Federal Law on Nature Conservation and Heritage Protection (Art 5 and 6, NHG) and is affiliated with the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO).

The ITS's task is to take stock of all historical traffic routes that are worthy of protection. This also includes the elements accompanying the path (distance stones, chapels, crosses, inns, etc.). The inventory should provide an insight into the history of transport in Switzerland.

The IVS is an extensive collection of maps, images and texts comprising around 57 federal files. It contains various information such as the course, history, condition and historical significance of each route. So that this variety of information can be communicated to a broad audience, the federal inventory is published in the form of a web GIS on the Internet. As a multimedia map of the historical routes in Switzerland, the IVS-GIS is a unique source of sources, data and information for all interested parties - laypeople as well as specialists.

The IVS documentation consists of three main products: a terrain map (based on the 1: 25,000 map of the Swiss national topography ), an inventory map and written documentation. The individual protected objects are evaluated according to their importance and the state of preservation. The evaluation consists of the three levels locally, regionally and nationally worthy of protection. In the short monographs for each traffic route, the historical evidence is listed and the course and current condition are described.

The main inventory was carried out between 1983 and 2003.

The cantons are solely responsible for the processing and protection of the traffic routes classified as locally and regionally worthy of protection. The federal government is only responsible for protecting those traffic routes that are worthy of national protection.

In addition to the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance (BLN) and the inventory of Swiss sites worthy of protection (ISOS), the IVS is the third inventory under the Swiss Federal Act on Nature Conservation and Heritage Protection.

map

The IVS terrain map and IVS inventory map are based on the 1: 25,000 map of the Swiss national topography. The routes are marked in color on the IVS inventory map (in the old version in black). The protection status is indicated by the colors:

  • red stands for nationally worthy of protection,
  • blue for regionally worthy of protection and
  • green for locally worthy of protection.

In contrast, the IVS terrain map is only black.

The substance is marked on the IVS inventory card as follows;

  • Single line (IVS terrain map; single line): The historical lines have been preserved, otherwise overprinted (actually no historical substance of the road is visible any more).
  • Narrow double line: paths that still have traditional substance.
  • Bold double line: path area with a lot of substance (partly still completely preserved in its original form).

For this purpose, the elements on the path that are worth protecting and accompanying the path are marked with black symbols. Retaining walls, remains of road relocations, etc. are also listed on the IVS terrain map.

In both cases, the inventory number is listed next to the elements. This is made up of the canton abbreviation and the number (a sequence of groups of numbers separated by dots). The first group describes the route. In the case of different lines and special sections (individual objects), these are represented by the following two blocks.

Examples
  • BS 20 is the Rhine in the canton of Basel-Stadt (no alternative routes or sections).
  • AG 8.2.3 the hour stone on the line AG 8.2 Neue Aargau Strasse on the route AG 8 (Baden -) Lenzburg - Suhr (- Bern) in the canton of Aargau.

Cultural routes in Switzerland

Based on the inventory, the Swiss Cultural Paths project develops hiking routes on historical traffic routes in Swiss cultural landscapes and makes them accessible to the public. The project is operated by ViaStoria , the Swiss specialist organization for research into the history of traffic and the preservation and sustainable use of historical traffic routes.
