Cultural routes in Switzerland
Swiss Cultural Routes is a national project that develops hiking routes on historical traffic routes in Swiss cultural landscapes and makes them accessible to the public. It is operated by ViaStoria , the Swiss specialist organization for research into the history of traffic and the preservation and sustainable use of historical traffic routes.
Basics and goals
Swiss Cultural Routes is based on the traffic history fundamentals that ViaStoria has developed in research projects and for the inventory of historic traffic routes in Switzerland (IVS). Historically significant traffic routes open up Switzerland's cultural landscapes. They network regional and local tourism initiatives and offers of regional agricultural products. Together with regional tourism organizations, Kulturwege Schweiz offers packages on numerous routes that include overnight stays, museum admissions, travel documentation and, in some cases, tastings and luggage transport between the stage destinations.
With Kulturwege Schweiz, ViaStoria wants to secure the use and maintenance of historical traffic routes, promote the sustainable development of the cultural landscape and contribute to sustainable tourism value creation in the regions. A didactic program sensitizes schoolchildren to the protection of the cultural landscape. The establishment of the Swiss Cultural Routes is financed by national and cantonal funding, foundations and sponsors from the private sector.
The route network
The route network of Kulturwege Schweiz consists of twelve main and 300 regional routes.
- The main routes form the national structure of the program; they tell an aspect of the cultural and transport history of Switzerland and can be hiked in several daily stages. Eight routes of Cultural Routes of Switzerland are to Hiking in from SchweizMobil integrated, the national network for non-motorized traffic . The network of main routes is complete
- The regional routes open up the cultural landscapes of Switzerland in a finer grid. They consist of one to several day hikes dedicated to a certain cultural landscape, a historical event or a regional specialty. The ViaRegio network is to be expanded significantly over the next few years. The network of regional routes has been completed as a planning tool. Individual routes have been implemented, others will be developed over the next few years in cooperation with local partners.
