ViaStoria cultural trail

Along Via Suworow there are many objects with memorial plaques that commemorate the legendary Alpine March and are being researched by ViaStoria . There are Suworow memorial plaques on the houses in which the general stayed, on the pass crossings (Kinzig, Pragel, Panixer, Suworowstein in der Tremola, equestrian statue from 1999 on the Gotthard pass height), the Russian monument from 1898 in the Schöllenen, the one to the victorious Battle of the Devil's Bridge , as well as the monumental Suvorov soldiers at the dam of the Panixersee .

history

During the Second Coalition War , Russian troops under General Field Marshal Suvorov crossed Switzerland in September and October 1799. Their route led them over six passes from south to north. The exhausting route led over 280 km and was made more difficult by various circumstances: rain in the Leventina, snow on the Panixer, heavy luggage and inadequate footwear, bad paths, destroyed bridges and constantly flaring up fighting.

The 22,000 Russian soldiers were on the road for 28 days. The course of the campaign against a numerically overpowering French army forced Suvorov to follow this exhausting, complicated route. The planned unification of the two Russian armies was no longer possible after Austria had left the coalition and the Russian army under Korsakov had been defeated in Zurich .

The only salvation left was a retreat across the Alps. This met with great interest and echo in Russia, which is also reflected in the atlas Suworow and continues to this day. On the occasion of his state visit to Switzerland, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev visited the Suvorov memorial on September 22, 2009.

For this forced march, which was associated with great human and material losses - which also affected the Swiss population living along the route through the contributions and requisitions - Suvorov was later awarded the highest military degree of "Generalissimo" by Tsar Paul I.
